I am trying to increase my flock size by hatching eggs under my broody moms. However, we also raise ducks and are having an issue with loosing chicks in our duck pond. Unfortunately, we cannot fence off our pond (its too big). So I was thinking about building brooder pens for my moms and their chicks. My question is: How big should I make each one? Can I put more than one hen in each pen? And any ideas on what type of pen I should use? Fenced in area, cage, etc...

A pen 3' x 4' would house a hen & 10 chicks. You should have a small house so they can get out of the rain & have someplace to go at night. The wire should be 1" chicken wire, any bigger & the chicks can squeeze through. The top should be covered as well to protect them from birds, hawks & what ever other critters there are around. Keep in mind that Raccoons & dogs can tear the wire off & get inside. Some Hens get along well together even with chicks, but a lot don't , so it's best each hen has her own place
