I'm new here and new to chickens. My hen has developed what I would describe as an abscess. I'm not sure what to do.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Oh gosh, that looks like a bad sinus infection. Tylan is the best thing for sinus issues. Definitely stop by our Emergency section for help with this.

I hope your bird makes a full recovery! :)

Can anyone explain to me why/how a sinus infection causes something like this?

The sinuses fill with mucus when they have a respiratory infection. MG, or MS can cause sinus infections, irritants in the air like too much ammonia from poop and not enough ventilation in the coop, chickens can even have allergies to things that act as irritants. Weak immune systems, etc...

So would this bump thing be something that could be drained?
Or would the swelling just go down with antibiotics?
