I went into the barn last night to candle my eggs. I found one rotten and one infertile. The rest had a black mass inside (no movement could be seen). We are about 11-12 days. My question is that when I candled the eggs, about 9 out of 12 of the eggs, the mass was on the side of the egg an not in the end. All of the pictures I have seen showed the chick at one end of the egg with the air sac on the other. There was an air sac in all of them, but on those, again it wasn't at an end, but on the side longways. Does this make sense? Are my chicks ok?

Can you see the air sac at large end of the egg? When I candle mine I can see a well defined air sac at the large end and the mass/chick does look like it is in the middle of the egg, but as it grows it will fill out the middle and small end. By day 18 about 1/3 of the egg is taken up by the air sac and the rest is baby.

Actually, some of them it seems as though the air sac is on the side, unless I am not seeing this right. Most of the eggs have a black mass about 2/3 in it or so. She never adjusts them that I notice and I really don't want to candle them again. I guess I'll just let nature take it's course and see what happens! Thanks!
