On the matter of breed, it appears this guy has feathered feet, or is that just the picture -- if the feet are feathered it is not a Buff Orpington as mentioned above.

When I bought them I was told they were Cochin and hens

He is a cochin, just not a hen. How old were the birds when purchased?

Did you get them from hatchery/retail store or a private seller?
With chicks there is always an "oops" rate on sexed pullets - average is 5-10% that can be sold as pullets but may be cockerels- that is for vent sexing. Certain "sex linked" chicks are able to be sexed by color or feather sexed, this are crosses that use genetics in your favor by hatching with males having one characteristics and females another.

The black one - can you get a clearer (maybe better lighting) picture? It really looks like there are some cockerelish saddle feathers showing, but it *could* just be the way that part of the bird is shown in this lighting......
