First time chicken owner and wondering

Pretty girl who looks about ready to lay. Is she squatting when you approach?

Keep an eye out for that, and, after she squats, should be about 10 days to a month for eggs. But mine laid at 21 weeks.

We have 4 and only one squats when we walk close the rest seem to scatter still, I put colors on them to try to figure out whose laying but not having much luck!

Oh, she might be your layer, then. I didn't realize you were getting an egg already.

If you want to be sure, there are posts on here that teach you how to do butt checks and measure the distance between the pelvic bones.

But if you've got one egg and one squatter, that's almost certainly your layer.

And yea, that one looks pretty much the same as my RIR hen over here. She's an absolute champ of a layer giving us some very large brown eggs. I also think you have a female here.
