My young Rhode Island Red was introduced to our flock of bantams 2 days ago. He's been in a mini coop inside the big coop for weeks while growing up so he wouldn't be totally unfamiliar with the hens until he was big enough. All was well then I went out to feed this morning and the poor guy was bloody at the base of his tail and I think I even see a bit of bone back there. He seems ok, he's eating and drinking and is safely back in his mini coop. Is there anything I should be doing to make sure infection doesn't set in on him? I'm new to chickens and everything has been great up until now. Thanks for any advice!

Also pick up some bitter apple or bitter cherry spray. Use every day on the rooster. It will help stop the pecking. Do you know which hen is your alpha? She may be the one doing the pecking. Find out who the violator is and put her in the cage for a while.
