Hi all. Last week one of our hens turned up with an eye injury. She's acting totally normal, we gave a couple shots of duramycin, then put her on ciprofloxin eye drops. It's helped some with the swelling, but I think it's stalled out. Advice? She's not a pet, so we aren't going to do anything expensive to save her. But I'd like to avoid culling her if we can fix her eye. She still has a blink reflex and intact eye beneath all of the swelling.

Pictures are of the day we found her injury and today after 5 days of eye drops.

It depends on what bacteria is affecting the eye. A vet could do an eye culture or give you Cipro or enrofloxacin (Baytril) as long s she won't be used for eating. Respiratory diseases that affect the eye respond to oxytetracycline and Tylan, but if it is a peck wound or something stuck in her eye, she might need a stronger antibiotic. E.coli and other coliform bacteria can be common in infections, and tetracyclines or Tylan won't help. Clean the white pus out of her eye with QTips and saline. Some fellow recently had a hen with a huge swollen pus filled eye, that was due to a weed stuck under the 3rd eyelid.

She's already on Cipro. She's a laying hen, not for eating. She can't be feeling too bad as she's still laying 4 or 5 eggs a week, which is her normal. The white bit is hard, I tried getting it out but she won't sit still long enough.
