Hens laying eggs in random places

is it odd for hens to lay without laying mash or feed?

Not at all. I have never fed layer feed to my flock, ever. They get commercial feed formulated for chickens, geese, turkeys, ducks called All Flock. BUT I also supply crushed oyster shell in a separate dish, free choice.

Hens need calcium to replace the calcium used to make eggshells so they can lay for a while when they start (because they used their own calcium) but it will take a toll on their bodies if they don't get replacement calcium.

ok im feeding 5 to 1 now thinking of switching to 11 to 1 for there feed. just kinda curious. was told to get them to lay to feed em mash. they get vitamins n all extras they want. they eat better than me lol. do you know how to tell if silkies a roo or hen? i got given to blue splashes n a buff. 4 months old.
