    Hey Everybody!
I just caught the back yard chickening bug and I can't stop thinking about building my coop! I am new to raising chickens but I am very excited to start. My wife.... not so much. I'm going to try the tactic that the guy at Tractor Supply told me. First I plan to build a beautiful coop (my idea) that is almost 100% free. So far I have scrapped all the stuff from houses under construction (plywood, 2x4's, even windows). The less it costs the less reasons she has to say no right?
Second, I plan to take her and our 4 year old to say the baby chicks at Tractor Supply :) Devious I know. Anybody else have any suggestions? Also I'm kinda short on places to get pullets other than Tractor Supply or Agro Supply. Is there anybody nearby that says fertile eggs or pullets? I tried to search through the other forums but didn't see much. Anyway, I hope to see yall around. I plan to document my coop building process but it will probably look similar to ones already posted. After all, there are so many on here it would be hard not to look like them lol

Welcome to BYC! Good luck building your coop. We also used salvaged materials for a coop and it's awesome! Still very sound after almost 10 years. Chick days at Tractor Supply already! Went yesterday and they had 4 breeds of chicks and one duck breed.
There's a NC thread in "Where am I, Where are you" on the board. You may find someone close that has fertile eggs.

Hello and welcome to BYC [IMG] Your plans sound great! Hopefully you will get your wife on board soon. But then, few people can resist a chick, so that's a great idea. Here are some sections you can look at to help you with your plans and preparation:

    Coops:

And for local breeders, find your state thread here and ask the members there:

Breeds, if you haven't picked any:

Welcome! I had another whole post until I saw the NC not SC. I've found some super helpful people on my state thread...I bet the NC thread can help you find local birds.

Coops are super easy to build and can be made super cheap...You don't even have to put any glass in the "windows" just cut the holes and then cover in hardware cloth...Everyone loves chickens surely. Shouldn't be too hard to convince someone when showing them some super cute tiny little peepers...especially if you already have a free coop. Free coop is what got my husband on board with me starting my chicken venture. We are now going to cheaply build another couple coops...but he's on board. You'll get it.
