I’m terrible with introductions, so I’m just going to do a lil copy/pasta 🙃

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Pretty new. We had chickens and ducks off and on growing up. My husband grew up with Chickens. We got our first chicks for our home this spring.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 3 big babies that have moved to the coop and 4 new bitty babies.

(3) What breeds do you have? Big Babies: 2x Mystic Onyx, 1x bantam (possibly a MF or Patridge Cochin) and our 4 littles are all bantam. From an assorted batch.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Their personalities. My little boy has always had a fascination with birds in general so he is loving having chickens. He says they make his heart so happy it has a beak now! (He is 5)

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Is being a mom a hobby?! I don’t have much else, we love camping and I chauffeuring my kiddo to his activities like swim team.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am married, we have a 5yr old little boy. I am a substitute teacher and my husband travels for work doing Wireline in Texas. We have a 3yr old Golden Retriever named Rosie who was a rescue and is fantastic with out chickies. I’m def a newbie and we’ve had a few struggles. We lost our very first big babies to a stray dog who got into our yard. We were heartbroken. We’ve reinforced the fence and little coop and are starting work on a bigger coop/pen.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? I found it while searching up what breed our bantam babies might be.

Hello, welcome to BYC. I'm sorry for the loss of your first flock.
Live and learn I guess but man it was a tough lesson. We’ve never had issues with any pets/animals harming other pets/animals. Same stray apparently got a pet rabbit about a week after ours and then a pig a few days ago. That neighbor took care of it. We worked on our fence and coop. No issues since. I felt terrible tho. Poor (big) babies. 😢

Welcome to the BYC family!
Please look in to getting 1/2 hardware cloth. It really helps to keep predators out. Remember chicken wire is worthless.
Yesss!! We have done research since then and that’s the plan when we build the larger coop/pen. The small coop we have is pre-built and it is not chicken wire but it is small and those dogs were big and they clawed the hatch door open. Tough lesson for sure. We also fixed where they got into our yard to begin with. Because it is fenced in and a large animal like stray dogs shouldn’t have gotten in to begin with.
