I'm originally from Kentucky, I currently live in Roanoke, VA, and I used to live in southern IN (Seymour area). I spent 6 years doing nutritional research, mostly on layers, but some on broilers, in typical commercial settings.

I love chickens and now that I'm out of the animal ag industry (and working on green environmental products), I'm considering raising some birds in the back yard.

Anyway, I know a thing or two about commercial laying operations and commercial broiler operations that may be transferrable to small flocks if anybody would be interested.

I can have up to 10 birds based on local regulations, and I'm especially fond of bantams. I have a decided preference for clean-legged hens that are spangled or barred. I'm looking at Sebrights, Barred Rock, Golden Campine, etc.

I've had Sebrights and Barred Rocks in the past (along with dozens of other breeds). Sebrights are delightful little bantams, but I wouldn't recommend keeping them in a mixed flock with standard sized breeds like Barred Rocks or they will likely take a beating. Whatever breeds you end up getting, good luck with your flock.
