Adirondacks of NY
Hi,

I'm SJ and I live in the Adirondacks of upstate NY. I've been working with chickens for about 3ish years now and have learned that it is truly my passion. Just tried my hand at incubation for the first time and it was a big success! Out of 16 eggs, 12 hatched and 11 survived. For a while I was managing a flock of 9 hens and 1 roo alongside another flock of 11 hens and a roo but due to a weasel, a fox and some much needed culling I am down to 1 roo and 5 hens from my personal flock and 8 hens from the other. Very happy to have new additions of 6 Plymouth Rock pullets, 2 Welsummer pullets, 1 Sussex pullet and 11 newly hatched Easter Eggers! Also found a huge boost in predator-wariness by adding 4 Guineas.

My dream and current goal is to set up a small organic egg and poultry farm that functions under the 1000 bird exemption. If anyone here has any advice to help me along I'd sure appreciate it! I'm ready to share information and birds!

Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us and congrats on your incubating success!

I'd say that most members here, whilst they may sell eggs to help pay for feed costs, probably don't fall into the category of commercial enterprises. That's not to say that there aren't some. Maybe if you start a thread in the Random Ramblings forum - https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/random-ramblings.7/ - that may seem like a strange forum to ask for assistance, but I honestly can't think of a more suitable forum.

I've just done a search and there seems to be at least 2-3 threads that may be good starting points - https://www.backyardchickens.com/search/41033/?q=small+scale+egg+business&o=date

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224
Good luck

Thank you! I'll definitely look around and try out my local thread.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. I'm afraid I don't know anything about large commercial egg farming.
Thanks for the welcome! No worries, small scale is all I'm after. The exemption allows for me to process and sell eggs and meat without those expensive permits and inspections required for large commercial farmers. Plus, I love chickens and really don't want to ruin the pleasure of working with them by becoming a large producer, I'd like to keep it personal while making a decent payback.
