Have just built a coop and a permanent run, in readiness for my chickens.Think i will be getting four Road Island Reds, that's all i have room for.
However i have a question, the floor of my run is loose soil have heard of a problem Chickens can get if it is too muddy.
Would it be advisable to compact the soil ,and then cover it with chipped wood bark?
Thanx

you may want to mix some coarse sand and gravel into the dirt to improve drainage and give it "substance."

Welcome to BYC. Chickens can make a real mess in the mud, but they also love it. I think you can compact it and then throw wood chips over it, but depending on how many chips you plan to put down, you might be able to skip the compacting and just put down a solid layer of wood chips.
