Hi from New Mexico,
I haven't been into raising chickens for very long. Started this past summer. Right now I have 7 chickens. Red has been around the longest. Red was raised by me from a chick. He is very friendly, and looks to me for support. Red was king of the yard until Big Red showed up. Big Red was already a full grown rooster when I got him, and quickly laid down the law when he was released into the yard. When I am out side and Red needs to get away from Big Red, he comes perch on my shoulder.
Last week I was given 5 chickens. Four hens, and a big fat rooster. The rooster was so fat he could hardly walk. When Big Red seen fat rooster, he wasn't pleased. I thought they would figure out their pecking order, so I went in the house to watch a movie. Later I went back out only to find that Big Red had killed fat rooster.
Now Big Red has claimed the 4 new hens, and they all hang together. Red and a brahma hen I call Little Britches hang out together, apart from the others. It's funny! Big Red will put Red in his place, but allows him to live. Even allows Red to have a hen. Then again couldn't tolerate fat rooster to live. Maybe Red stays alive because he can run fast. I don't know. It is chicken society, and chicken rules.
Anyway, I really like my new hobby. I enjoy watching their antics, and enjoy all the fresh eggs too. I get about 20 eggs a week. It will be cool when spring comes. I will let them hatch out eggs then, and have a ton of chicks.
Edit: 2 Road Island Red Roosters, 1 Brahma Hen, 1 Plymouth Rock Hen, 3 Ameraucana.
