HI..... thought I would change my introduction..........I live in Las Vegas and keep chickens in the back yard. I have 4 beautiful buff girls. We started out with 10 because my husband was afraid not all would live as babies. They survived.....and there was only 1 beautiful rooster which I gave to a friend that lives near the mountains in Las Vegas since I live in town and have neighbors. We then sold 4 hens and kept five. We just lost one due to an accident. I also have 2 gold fish, 1 red devil, gerbil, and a pug mix. I have lived in Las Vegas for 4 years moved from MI for a teaching position (special education). We decided to get our own chickens to have our own eggs. Our chicks are friendly and my son can pick them up, kiss and hug them, he is our egg collector.

[IMG] I am so sorry that "trouble" is what brought you hear but so glad you have joined us.

If she was my bird - I would place her in a crate (plastic or wire dog kennel) to help limit her movement for a couple days - see how that helps her. It also help you monitor her food and water in take and give treatment easier. (think about when you are injured - a day or so to heal is really nice)

Neosporin can be used - if it is the type without any pain killer in the formula (no 'caines). Is the wound red and hot? If so you might try a warm compress against it for 15 minutes or so at a time - 2 to 3 times a day. Organic Honey is also a great wound treatment - sticky but great.

I would also like to invite you to join the BYC Nevadans thread - lots of great chicken peeps in your "area" LV. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=253930 Course we have great peeps spread all thru the state [IMG]

Thank you the woung is infected and lots of puss. It got behing the crates ....we looked for it and could not find it until the next mornong. It had a hard time walking and now the wound is infected. It has been three days already and she is looking sad and in pain. My gut feeling is she is not going to survive. I will keep trying. Since we dumped peroxide on her she has just layed there and has not moved. Thank you again I will try anything I just do not want her to suffer in pain while I try.....[IMG]

First, [IMG]. [IMG] I used to live in Vegas...Henderson to be exact.

If it is infected, go to the feed store and see if you can get amoxicillin or cephalexin. That is what our vet recommended to us and it was available at the feed store for 100 pills (250 mg) for $30 for Amoxicillin and $40 for Cephalexin (yes the SAME as what we buy from the pharmacy, but cheaper and "for vet use only"). Give the hen 1/3 of a pill 2-3 times a day. It is a powder, so I would just put it on a plate and try to take half in the morning and half in the evening. The remainder left in the plate is ~1/3 of the pill since it isn't easy to scoop it all up, so she was getting 2/3 a day minimum. Keep it up for 10 days, just like we do. You an just sprinkle it on food and give it to her as a treat.

Clean the would well with diluted iodine (like a med-dark tea color) and pack it with neosporin or any other triple antibiotic (just make sure that it if is a triple antibiotic with pain killer that it does not have lidocaine or any other 'caine med in it (like HorseFeatherz mentioned). 'Caines are toxic to chickens). The name brand Neosporin with pain killer does NOT use a 'caine, but most others do. Keep the packed with neosporin and, if possible, keep her indoors (in a dog kennel or something) to keep dirt out of the wound.

Oh! You can irrigate with water that has antibiotics mixed in as well.

Sorry to say my chicken did not make it...Other chickens are making lots of noise I believe they understand what is going on strange...I have 4 chickens left and plan to make sure it stays that way.
