Hi everyone. My name is Sean and I live in Belfast, Ireland. I have been considering keeping perhaps 3 hens for my own supply of eggs and as pets. I have been reading up on it but I must confess that I am a bit concerned about attracting rats and about any health risks to my lungs. Any advice or a pointer on how to navigate the site to find this information would be greatly appreciated. I would really interested in rescued battery hens. This looks like a fabulous site! God bless. Sean.

Hi Sean, it's nice to have you here with us! Good for you on doing your homework before diving into getting poultry...just like so many other endeavors, it's best to be as prepared as possible. Good luck to you!
Hello Sean. Welcome to BYC. A dust mask when cleaning coops will certainly reduce health risks. Don't leave feed out will help not to attract rats. Feed the chickens and take the food away.
