Hi my name is Kate n I live just outside beautiful Savannah GA. Two yrs ago I woke up to 2 roosters in my back yard, now as I have 2 big dogs n 5 cats I thought it very surprising that these 2 birds would just pick my house to roost, so I have wondered if someone just didn't put them in my yard. Every one in my neighborhood knows I rescue animals so I have always wondered. After finding this site I finally found out what kind of bird Jack is, American Game Bantam, after reading about them I now know why I have only one left, seems they don't get along after they become get around 6 months old. My one cat (Weba) n Jack are best friends, they play together and when she comes in, he is at the door pecking to come in too. I have had birds all my life but never Roosters or Chickens. I was wondering to find out a little more about my Jack. He is a real character and has never bothered my cats at all, n often find him laying next to them, and eating & drinking with them. How long do the live? He LOVES dry cat food, will that harm him? He eats really anything u give him, loves tomatoes too. When he sees me pulling into the driveway he comes running across the yard to greet me because he knows I will give him a handful of cat food. My neighbors love seeing him pecking around the trees in my yard, when they take their walks. I will say he's a loving little guy, n I sure do love him to death. Anyway sorry about the ramblings.

[IMG] So glad you have joined us. I'm near MACON, GA, not to far from you.

Jack is gorgeous and sounds like he is a lovable rooster. Chickens are such fun to get to know and each does have a unique personality.

It may be difficult now to transition him over to chicken feed - but best that you do try to accomplish this to offer him the best nutrition, and let him have cat food only in limited amounts as treats.

You should visit the Learning Center for articles to help you care for your new chickens.

Feel free to ask questions, we're here to help.

Nice to meet you Kate. Welcome to Backyard chickens. I agree - about getting him onto chicken feed - cat food is too high in sodium for chickens., and probably lacking things he needs. So glad he fits in with your cats - that could have been a major issue. I would imagine he has been around them before. You may be interested in the thread, "people with house chickens."

If you want to discover his breed post photos at "what breed or gender is this." If you have more stories about him you may want to post at "Stories and pictures of my chickens."
