Hello. My wife and I are going to build our new home North of Sparks ( on Grass Valley road) soon. We haven't raised chickens before although as a kid I helped feed and picked up eggs as a child. I am to be 55 soon and my wife is a little bit older than I am. We have had many different pets over the years( we had 27 at one point) including cats, dogs, birds, tortoise s, lizards, spiders, snakes, and chinchillas. I'm currently doing my homework to find out as much as possible about chickens before I jump right in. My main question is what breeds are the best for standing the heat but also the cold ? I would like to raise some for eggs of course but I also want to raise some for meat. I have so many questions as to how many square feet does each chicken ? What's the best feed, what extra vitamins will I need to give them? The whole ball of wax. Thank you for the assistance.

Hi Bill, it's nice to have you here!

If you haven't already done so, be sure to check out the Learning Center (it's under the Articles tab)...there's a ton of good information there to help you get started.

Best of luck with all your plans!

Hi Bill:

Here is a good article on choosing the right breed for you and things to consider. See attached breed chart in article, easily seen under gallery section of article.

As far as broilers Meyers Hatchery around here in Polk Ohio has broilers to sell.

Hi Bill and welcome to BYC. I wish you luck with your new chicken project.

On this link you'll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping birds - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource as mentioned above. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archives

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link, if you have not already done so. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes
