...and there is no recovery in sight!

When I was little I was lucky enough to have a bazillion animals as part of my family, including 14 hilarious Polish hens, and I have just never grown out of my love for animals (not that I would ever want to, anyways!).

I have three rescue dogs that I've had almost eight years now: Emily (basenji/border collie mix), Bear (cream shiba inu), and Kuma (black/tan shiba inu). They are adorable, loyal, hilarious, and 100% fluent in sass.

In my spare time, I'm an avid gardener, jazz singer, fiction reader, volleyball player, surreal artist, novice archer, and weekend warrior. I am definitely obsessed with unique/rare animal breeds and plants, and my house for sure reflects that.

On to the topic of chickens: I'm currently incubating 8 svart hona fertile eggs with a hatch date of 3/24. I'm also going to receive 33 day old chicks (breeds include: polish, silkie, easter egger, and cochin). Of those chickies, I'm going to ultimately keep around 12 to 16 and rehome the rest. Please let me know if you are local to Portland (PDX) and interested in any of those breeds! I will post about them later on as well.

I'm also in the process of building a coop + greenhouse enclosure for dem chickies in my backyard, and will post pics soon! I'm really looking forward to being a part of this community and meeting some awesome new friends!

Hi Rachel, it's nice to meet another animal lover plus you get extra points for having dogs. Shibas are getting very popular in our area. I have never seen a black and tan in person(dog) but I'm sure its very attractive.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Thanks so much for the warm welcome and kind words! I love your profile pic of your pup and chickens all together and not (literally) at each-other's throats. I'm desparately hoping to not to walk outside "CSI:pDX--Murder time mother cluckers" after turning my back on dem puppies and dem chickies for not even a second. I would love to hear any tips you have for keeping the peace!

My native language is sass, so all the animals in my life end up developing fluency pretty quickly--LOL!

Thanks for the links!

Welcome to BYC! Great choice of chickens :thumbsup, Silkies are for sure the best!!

Thank you! I'm really looking forward to having silkies... they look like little miniture alpacas and that is just something I cannot handle like a mature adult.

Hi, Rachel....Here are a couple dog + chickens articles you might find helpful:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/introducing-your-dog-to-chickens-tips-tricks
and https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/dealing-with-dogs-who-kill-chickens
Hope they help you out. Can't say what I do that is that magical. I introduce my day old chicks to my dogs - the dogs sniff them and then they're done. They want to meet each new batch, do the sniff test and from then on they just ignore them. I have a chocolate lab and a golden retriever. They somehow just know that the poultry belongs.
