Hi Everyone!! I'm Elicia and new around here. I have loved and dreamed of owing (pet) chickens for a looooong time and am finally taking the plunge! I am a wife of 13 years and mommy of a 3 and 7 year old. We are all excited about our new adventure. We haven't bought any chicks just yet but are getting prepared. I'm sure I will have a ton of questions. Nice to meet you!
Hello and Welcome to BYC! Glad to have you join! Feel free to make yourself at home! What breeds do you plan on getting?
I'm glad you joined our "flock!" Good luck with your future chickens! Have you thought about what breeds you want? If you have any questions, just ask! We'll be happy to help. I would advise checking out the informative Learning Center, too: Learning Center Articles

Hi! Thanks Chicken Girl1! I am pretty ignorant about breeds to be honest. I think I would like to have a couple Ameraucanas. I am at the mercy of what pullets they have available at Tractor Supply though. I can't chance getting a rooster as a live in a neighborhood and don't want to disturb the peace. haha! I think they currently have Barred Rock and Leghorn pullets. I have read great things about both breeds so I am happy to start off with those ladies. ;-)
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join to our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My 7 year old granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Ameraucanas (if they come from a tractor supply, feed store, or hatchery, they will actually be Easter Eggers instead of true Ameraucanas) are a good choice for children. They are my granddaughter's favorites. She loves their colored eggs. With children though, I would avoid the Leghorns which are usually high strung and flighty. Other breeds with a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) are Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Sussex, and Faverolles. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your chicks.
