OKAY, so Im going to grow lots of corn and boss for the birds. They get range all the time, corn/boss, sprouts, and (for now) flock raiser. But Im trying to convert them and I need another protein idea for them that I can grow...... any ideas?

This is a great question! I've been looking into growing mealworms or black solider flies. I lucked out this past spring/summer and had lots of crayfish larvae to offer my flock, I can only assume they are protein rich and I'm hoping to incorporate those again this year. I didn't grow them myself, but I scavenged them from our pond.

I grow meal worms for my chickens. Fed live, their percent protein is the same as beef. My chickens go hog-wild and nearly tear off my fingers, trying to get the meal worms.

I grew some amaranth this past year but not nearly enough. It was easy to grow and looks pretty too. I am not sure of the protein content. They seemed to like it.

We were able to pick turnip and greens for free from a friend that grew a 1/2 acre. I looked it up online and the greens are full of calcium. Just thought I would add this as I am planning on turnips in my garden this year.
