Hello,

I am fairly new to chickens & chicken breeds. I have chicken care down pretty well, but not so much chicken breeds so I am looking to broaden my knowledge. While at the fair, I stumbled upon some mottled houdans and just fell in love. I think they're beautiful! I looked around for a houdan thread, but found nothing. Does anyone have some houdans they would like to show pictures of? Does anyone have any advice or information they could share about houdans?

Thanks!

I used to have some Mottled Houdans years ago and they were very sweet and friendly birds, but only fair layers (which is partly why I don't have them anymore). However, if egg production is not a major consideration with you, I would certainly recommend them, with one reservation. Houdans do well in confinement, but because they are so docile, and because their crests can impede their vision and also make targets for other chickens, I would not mix them in with other breeds, unless it is more crested breeds like Polish or Silkies.

Thank you for this advice. It might not be good for me to get any until I can have another coop built then. I have 6 other chickens that I feel would give them quite a hard time. I mainly have my chickens for eggs, but I'm also considering showing some in the fair next year and I really do love the look of moddled houdans. Maybe I can have a new coop built for them sometime soon :)
