How contagious is coccidiosis?

Oh day 4 of treating a sick pullet (8 weeks) who suddenly became very lethargic and stopped eating/drinking. Could not find a single vet who would look at her (either not taking new patients or several months wait), so started treating her for coccidiosis based on kind help given here and my FB group. Here’s the thing: I know Corrid is very hard on their bodies. So if she doesn’t have coccidiosis, I’m hurting her.

None of the other pullets became symptomatic. Is that common with coccidiosis - that only one bird could be affected?

I really want to get this bird on vitamins, but that would defeat the purpose of the corrid. I feel stuck as to what to do.

Her worst day was Tuesday. Couldn’t stand by herself and didn’t open her eyes once. She’s a little better since then. Could be the corrid…. but could be that she’s on ACV, colloidal silver, organic EVOO, and ground egg yolk. I just don’t know.

Any words of advice from those who’ve been through this? She’s on day 3 of corrid. Thank you.

First corrid is not hard on them. Coccidiosis is not an illness. It is an overload of normally occurring cocci that is in the gut. They get this overload by eating waste from chickens with it in it. It's nots contagious per se' but is transmissible via the poo. It can also be prolific in moist conditions aswell. So clean and dry living conditions and not overcrowding is best. Depending on what strength corid you're using will dictate how long it will be till it clears although you should see an improvement within a couple days. I like using the 20% for cattle for 3 days.

Thank you. I guess contagious was the wrong word… but I thought the transmission rate via droppings was high. My coop and run are quite large (I only have 6 pullets) so they’re not overcrowded. Maybe I should remove bedding daily right now? (Obviously the one pullet is separated - currently in my house.)

It was a veterinarian who told me corrid was hard on them, since it prevents vitamin absorption.

Yes, I have the 20% corrid. I was told 5 days, but if it’s only 3, she’d be finished midday today. She still has her eyes closed most of the day and is passive, but is more vocal and aware than she was Tuesday.

Corid is not hard on the birds and coccidiosis is highly unlikely to the problem since your birds are older and all the same age.

What is exactly have you been feeding your birds daily?

My bad...I read 8 months old. Not 8 weeks.

Coccidiosis is likely. I just read your other threads. It sounds like you've had some sneezing too...which may mean respiratory disease.

Can you get a CLEAR video of your birds including the sickest one and pictures of fresh poop?
