I have 2 2wk old ducklings and I am wondering if we can tell the sex at this age? They really don't have feathers yet so the tail feather option is out I think. When they are just "talking they both sound the same but if they get separated from each other or us one is definitely more vocal.

you can't tell at this point. You will need to wait until they get their voice and then you can tell.

Vent sexing is not easily explained. There's a video that Metzer put out on youtube showing how it's done, but it's kinda hard to do, never mind at 2 wks old.

It's much easier when the duck is small enough to hold in one hand since the duck WILL wiggle and squirm when you turn it upside down.

It does take some practice but I think there are even vidoes of young children doing it so it does not take a brain surgeon to figure it out.

OK so I watched a you tube video on it, but I think you're right mine might be a little big but I'll give it a shot.

I didn't say it requires a 4 year degree + 3 years on the job experience, but having attempted vent sexing I can tell you the unless you have someone who can explain when you're fully inverted, tell you in their estimation that the duck is holding it it, or that the bump there tells us its female, you're going to flip the duck over, invert the vent and go uhhhhhh. I think that's a female?

For years I sexed the drakes easily but was unsure about the hens, not knowing about the bumps. I have gotten better with practice so I can vent sex the hens easily now. I am also better at detecting the throbbing when a drake is holding it in so I can find the boy part easier. Once you know the basics it just takes practice.
