How do you help your chickens handle the extreme heat?

Our heat index is over 100 today - and I can hardly bear to go outside. My chickens have shade, plenty of fresh water and plenty of food. What else should I be doing to make sure they're okay in this heat?

hmmm...well...no replies. Did your chickens survive the day? If so, I guess they don't need anything further. [IMG]

There are a number of recent (and older) threads about this, probably mostly in Managing your Flock.

I have fans on the ones in the house that need it (chicks) and a mister system set up for the outside birds

I give mine ice water to drink on hot days. I don't know if it helps them, but they love it.

Thanks! I searched for the topic before I posted - but I didn't see anything recent. However, I was doing my search under feeding/water your flock rather than "managing your flock." I'll check that category. LOL! Guess that does make more sense! My chickens seems to have survived just fine. I figured plenty of water and food - plus having some shade would be enough - but you never know. It's cooling down now anyway. Thanks again.

This is a young meat chicken, of many, that we are raising to show at our county fair. The air bubbles/pockets alarm me! HELP please.
    Thanks!
