How do you make a rooster gain muscle weight?

    My Lavender Oprington rooster survived Merek's, i believe, and i'm trying to figure out how he can gain weight for the winter. His muscle weight almost disappeared during his fight with the sickness several months ago. I feed my birds organic, non-gmo feed from a local farm. If anyone knows how to get a bird to gain muscle mass let me know. Thanks

    I would like to know as well as I have a Jersey Giant Rooster who is in poor condition that I want to restore to his old body builder self. He was one scary dude before - thick muscles, black, curling spurs, and scarred face. He was the first rooster I ever got, my big guard baby.

    I am assuming that you are feeding him enough protein, using a good quality chicken feed. A lot of his muscle development will depend on his genetics, and you may get a bit more through diet, but a leghorn rooster, for example, is not ever going to have a great deal of meat, compared to a dual purpose or meat bird.

    Currently I have a bachelor pad, and they need to be processed. I am giving them a bit more fermented scratch, as I too am hoping to put weight on them, but it will be a more fat bird. I am hoping that as I have kept them in a smaller run/coop and not let them free range, they won't be as tough. But I already know, that while these crossbreds will have some meat on them, once I get the feathers off, they will look scrawny compared to a grocery store chicken.

    You want more muscle, more lean meat, you need to have the right breeding.

    If Mareks involved, then fight it not over. Bird may be wormy or had extensive damage from intestinal worms or cocci infections. Worm infection needs to be ruled out.

    Food palatability may be an issue. The fermenting business can improve palatability. Animal protein can do same.

    In my setting I pop birds with whole corn and BOSS as they like to pack those on even when satiated for typical feeds. Also make certain plenty of grit available.
