Do not wash chickens as it strips them of the natural oils in their wings and they die. You may be able to give a wipe down with a cloth but washing will kill him. (From Experience)

I wash mine with dawn dish soap. I just had a hen that was skinned on both sides due to a coyote attack. I partly filled the bathtub and used a cup to rinse her off. I used just a little soap as I didn't want to hurt her. She loved sitting in the warm water and didn't mind the dryer. She looked very clean after her baths!

People wash their chickens all the time before a show. You can even blow dry them.

I think the 'washing off their protective coating' may pertain to ducks not chickens.

As long as you don't wash your chickens too often and use shampoo that is safe for them they should be safe, I use Ferret shampoo on my chickens also kitten and puppy shampoo. These pages from Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens should help you.[IMG]

Wow! You learn something every day.

I just did a quick search on washing chickens because my porcelaine colored EE rooster has fermented feed slopped all down the front of him and I was wondering if it would hurt him if I gave him a quick dunk in the sink to clean him up a bit. Never thought I'd find all this though.
