Certain breeds have the tendancy to be more or less friendly, however each bird is different from the other. Generally the more you work with them as chicks, the more friendly they become. I start working with chicks at day one. Most of mine eventually become lap hounds. If you purchase grown hens, expect some distance between you and them, you will need to win over the hearts of a new flock of grown birds.
The ones that are laying, or have bigger combs I find to be more friendly. My barred rock is not friendly, but she also has a very small comb and is not laying.so 3/4 are generally quite friendly
They run over whenever I come outside....I might have food!
.....and I don't even give many 'treats', maybe every couple weeks.
Rarely have had one that just lets me pick them up,
even back when I spent a lot of time handling them as chicks.
But I never let them sit on me, not my thing.
Mine come when I shake a container with scratch in it. They don't otherwise.
Mine don't like to be held, even though we handled them a lot as chicks. One will tolerate sitting on your lap if put there, but is antsy, and jumps off after about 5 minutes.
Mine come when I call and don't run from jack. I can catch them very easily I picked big slow breeds for that exact reason not that it matters the only time they break into a brisk jog is dinner time.
