I have 13 wk BO hens and I was wondering when they will reach full size and weight. They seem so big now but I know they do not yet approach the weight that the books say my breed will reach (at least they do not feel like it when I pick them up.)

    First of all: [IMG]

BO's will start to lay eggs at about 24 weeks, give or take. So, you are over halfway there!! Seems to take forever, but it will be well worth the wait [IMG]

Thank you for the welcome! So when hens start to lay is when they are full size and weight? (Sorry if this is a lame question.)

It's not a lame question at all!!! How will know if you don't ask. Around 6-7 months they are their adult weight. They can start laying sooner than that though. We have a BO that has grown substantially since she started laying.

Depends on the breed. A LF brahma is not considered full grown until 2 years old! If I'm not mistaken BOs are late to mature too.

Thank you all very much for your input. I would not have thought it possible for some chickens not to be considered fully grown till they were 2 years old. That's very interesting. Does anyone know when a BO is considered full grown? Also just out of curiosity what breed matures the fastest?

    BO stands for Buff Orpington.

Matures the fastest or puts on weight and size the fastest?

A Cornish X puts on weight the fastest, they hit harvest weight by 8 weeks, however you hardly want a full grown Cornish X just hanging around.

As far as the fastest maturing more standard breed in not sure.
