It appears, at least four hens can fit in my nest box at once.
they are together for support! Cheering each other on.
That would be the "midwife" and "doula" chickens, there to coach the one laying. Then they switch! Ha ha ha!
I wish I'd had the camera with me. Mine don't squeeze into the nest boxes together (that I've seen, anyway) but they love a good, community dust bath. I've seen as many as 5 pullets and a cockerel in a divot together -- if they weren't mostly different colors, it would be hard to tell where one chicken ends and another begins.
Birthing coaches...lol. I must say though, you have some very roomy nest boxes.
I have had chickens and my Muscovy ducks sitting together in a 12" x 12" box. But then again we are in Massachusetts and anything goes here!
I've seen 3 in one box, but they are only 12x14 - it was a tight fit with my big girls
