I had my 8 3 week old chicks outside yesterday while baby was down for a nap. When she woke up, I went inside to get her, change clothes/diaper and I heard a commotion outside. Ran outside to find two chicks in the crate and 6 chicks completely gone. Searched high and low and only found two more wedged behind a planter on the deck. While searching I heard two hawks calling from nearby. They must have been silently watching while I was outside. I was inside for 10 minutes tops . Four are still missing. There are lots of places they could have hidden. Under the deck/porch, under the car, under the shed, tall grass on the hillside, lots of shrubbery, forest. Even brought the dog out to try to find them... he was pretty useless. I guess if it were two hawks they could have grabbed one per foot.
