This summer I am going to have a small container pond that I will put out on my patio. I am really wanting to get some goldfish ( probably the small feeder goldfish) to put into it, but I don't know how much I should get. I want them to live a long lasting life and be happy

I am also going to get some water plants to put into the pond. The pot is 17 inches tall, and 21 inches wide. Thanks in advance!

Assuming you put 4" of substrate and have an inch of space left at the top, you have apx 18 gallons of water for the fish, likely less given that its curved not straight up and down.

People like to shove goldfish into tiny bowls, but really even those tiny single tails you are talking about can grow to a foot or more if given the chance. In that small of a pond I would not put more than 2 or 3.
