How much food to feed chicks in coop?

The day is quickly approaching when I'll be moving my 7 week old chicks out to the coop permanently. I read that to get them "trained" to come back to the coop at night (after I start letting them range...I know to keep them locked up in the coop for a few days to a week so they know it's home) that I should feed them only at sundown so they know to return home.

Since I don't feed them a specific amount now (I just keep the feeder filled with food and they eat as much as they want, when they want) I don't know how to feed them when they go out to the coop. Do I just fill their feeder and remove it in the morning when I let them out? Is there a specific measurement to feed them, like 1 cup per bird? Since they'll be eating bugs, worms, and veggies throughout the property, I'm assuming they won't need as much chick food as they do know. Is there a guideline I should follow? Thanks in advance.

No need to over think it.

After a couple nights in the coop, they will know where home is. I would suggest let them out just before sunset in the beginning. On their first free ranging, they will be timid and stay close to the coop and go right back to the coop at sunset. A few days, they will be just fine.

Keep the feeder as usual. They will eat what they need.

The only thing is at this age, they are easy prey for aerial attacks.

Thank you both! For your posts! :) so is 7 weeks a good time to move them to their coop? Or what's the rage of recommended timing?

It depends on the bird... you could have moved them in at 5 or 6 weeks even! I think that 7 weeks is perfect.

We moved ours out this week at 5 weeks old. It's already in the 80s here during the day. I will say, they have been SO HAPPY to be outside. It's like their entire personalities have changed! I'm glad I went ahead and did it.

I believe are chicks are about 3 weeks. I just wanted to get a general idea of age, since we'll be starting the building of the coop soon. Thank you for helping!!
