How much "jumping off" room do chickens need?

I'm adding new roosts and trying to figure out how to position them so that the hens don't dive-bomb their feeder and waterer. If there is a ladder, will the hens use it or is their preference for jumping down?

Mine do both. If they're not to impatient, they use the ladder. I've seen all 8 use the ladder, but if one gets part way up and stops, then they jump up. It's all in their mood.[IMG]
