How much space for each chick in the brooder?

My 2 week old chicks are outgrowing their cardboard box home. I have 12 chicks. How much room do they need?

I have 9 and built a 6x5x4 using 2x10's and chicken wire. In the garage with a heat lamp. This gives them some decent room to run around and have fun. I find this to be perfect.

Thank you. I live in FL and it is really warm so I had them moved into the chicken coop until a big snake got in there. SCARED ME REAL BAD! So I moved them back inside. The only place I can put a bigger box than the one they have is in my kitchen. But so be it. I'll do what I have to do.
