I was just gifted with 4 roosters that are about a year old each. One of them is really sweet and pretty but we really DONT need him breeding with the bigger girls. As he is a silky cross he is even small for butchering so, as hte kids really like him I was wondering if we could caponize him?

I am going to be getting the capon tools anyway for the younger roosters we are hatching but it would be nice to keep this guy, he is really pretty.

I can't really give a definite answer, but I can say with the size of the testicles on cockerels I butcher at 20ish weeks, it would take quite a large incision to be able to remove those things.

You might PM QueenMisha, she has lots of experience with caponizing.

Thanks D!

Am ordering the tools next month and shall do the younger birds that we hatched last month and will think about doing the older ones but will most likely just butcher them. Cock-a-leekie soup is a favorite here so they will be enjoyed either way.

I saw a capon in the store yesterday, they wanted $60 for it!!!

Wow, cant wait to make our own, they must be flippin fantastic to cost that much.
