We're gonna dig a big hole to throw in all our junk and scrap boards to burn - my question is, if the whole is dug and the chickens are out free ranging, will they fall in?

They probably won't fall in, but they may try to "fly" down to investigate. My chickens are rediculoulsly nosy!

I've heard of chickens drowning in horse troughs, so I wouldn't put anything past them.

Smart enough to get into trouble; not smart enough to get out. LOL

We have a burn pile. Ours investigate the pile but they don't get curious when we finally burn it. I'd say mine are pretty smart. I don't know about a pit though. I guess you could see how they do.
