How to get rid of rats in house?

Hi everyone,

This is not necessarily chicken related, except that the rats may be eating the chicken food, but does anyone have brilliant ideas for getting rid of rats that live in the floor/ceiling between the first floor and basement of my house? I think there are multiple ways for them to get in and out (it's an old rental house) but i'm not sure where all the holes are. We have a cat that hunts pretty well, but she hasn't been able to catch them. We don't want to use poison or snap traps because both the cat and the dog will eat poisoned rats and/or eat the bait on the snap trap themselves.

Any suggestions? They're starting to stink...

well either live bait traps then or there is some organic sachels that they dont like the smell...Also the electronic pest controls
