    Hey there.

I have heard of people hanging cabbage in the run or coop to keep the chickens busy. How exactly do you do this?

Also, if we have table scraps (veggies and things), do I just throw that in the run or am I supposed to put it in some sort of container?

    Thanks.

a bit of string will do to hang cabbage but dont hang it too high you will have chooks with over stretched neck lol. When throwing scaps into coop make sure all is eaten as it can rot and attract unwanted rodents.

Puncture the stem with a knife or something sharp and thread some heavy string or rope through the hole. Hang it from the rafters. This will make the cabbage hang upside down. [IMG]

Quote:I put treats and scraps in a big old roaster pan inside coop. It's easy to rinse it out. So far they have ate everything i ever threw in there. Good Luck Woody

I tried cabbage and my chickens didn't eat it. I read a post here about chickens who love lettuce (hung the same way) in the winter because there are few greens. That's when I realized why my chickens didn't want the cabbage because they have a large chicken yard and lots of grass.

I haven't tried lettuce, it's softer and they may like it better.

If on free range they probably won't eat it .

But you can make a basket out of 2X4 welded wire an attach it to the wall or fence about the heigth of the chickens back (maybe just a little higher) and just put your cabbage into the basket , chickens will love it .

I don't hang stuff myself, but I have seen someone do it using produce netting. The type that oranges are sometimes bagged in.

I prefer to use a stiff piece of wire to hang cabbage with. Push the wire through the cabbage core and make a 90 degree bend. Bend a hook on the other end and hang cabbage about 12" above floor. Be careful with string around chickens. I have actually had them swallow string.
