I have an 8 month old Barred Rock roo that has been cooped by himself for months. I took him out of the flock because I had too many roos and I loved this guy and didnt want to get rid of him. I got a barred rock pullet in May and have been waiting till she is old enough to put in with him. With the weather now getting colder I dont want him to have to go through the cold by himself, they snuggle to keep warm. So my question is even though she is not laying yet she is now 5 months old and I want to get her introduced as soon as possible. How should I go about doing this. They can see eachother through the fence so it is not like they are strangers, but I am afraid that since my roo has been by himself so long he will sex her to death...or worse...please I need suggestions here... thanks

Your best bet is to try them together when you can observe them and separate them again if needed, you might have to wait another month or so until she's laying, though your reason for it isn't totally sound, I have kept roosters separate all winter, not all chickens huddle together.

Thanks I will probably try that. I also need to get the hens out cause I currently have a bantam brooder on 8 eggs in the same coop they are in and I was thinking...although I may be wrong, that she would be better off without the full size hens in with her. I have a bantam roo and I keep him in the same coop as well...so as you see i need to do something a bit different.

I am familiar with such situations, good luck finding spots for everyone, I too have played musical chickens.
