We purchased the straight run top hat special this summer from MMM. My son wants to show them next summer at the county fair, so we'd like to keep some roosters that are a match for the hens. We probably have about 5 or 6 roosters that we could keep so he could show a hen and rooster of each type next summer. However, I only have about 20 hens, so that would be too many roosters. I do have a chicken tractor that has a small protected area on the top. I could put the roosters in there when they start to get big enought to be harrassing the hens this fall. But can they stay there through an Iowa winter? Not sure they would be warm enough. Any thoughts on how to keep the roosters without leaving them in with the hens? Building a new coop just for the boys in not an option. I do have a couple of large wire dog kennels that I suppose I could put in the coop and put 2-3 roosters in each. But I'm not sure I would feel good about keeping them cooped up in such a small area.
