! Pleased you joined us. Some breeds of hens, unfortunately, are just not broody and won't set on their eggs. Some people get a broody breed of hen (like a silkie) to set on the eggs. Others use an incubator. Post at the following link for more information. Good luck to you!

Ok so if I just have laying hens and now a rooster which I have fertile eggs the hen won't sit on them? Ordo I need another breed of chicken

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

Regardless of whether a rooster is present or not, a hen will not sit on eggs unless she is already broody. She will not go broody just because there are eggs in the nest. There is no way to make a hen go broody, it is a hormonal change that can't be induced. Go ahead and eat your eggs, or place them in an incubator if you want to hatch them.
