my name is John, and i'm from the east bay area, California near Lafayette.
We found this site searching for chicken toys and decided to join up to learn more. We have a backyard coop with 4 spoiled ladies in the backyard in a nice run we built for them.
We do alot of backyard gardening with heirloom seed veggies in raised beds. We have worked hard to create a little oasis for our family. We have toddler that loves to run around freely in the backyard too!
We are always looking for new ways to improve our backyard, flock, and garden. Our flock is made up of four fat, lovely ladies...."Cleo", an Ameraucana who is very broody. "Stevie", another Ameraucana. "Bonnie", our rhode island red, and "Norah", the fattest of them all, a Wyandotte.
They get along pretty well, Norah being at the top of the pecking order. Cleo at the bottom.
I built them a fancy barn styled coop with a corrugated steel roof from scratch. Half of the supplies were sourced from Craigslist free ads.
the run extends directly out from the coop 15' x 5' wide, then makes a 90degree turn and extends another 16' x 8' wide. The coop fence is 5' tall.

So far we haven't had any predator issues, and rats only come around at night to nibble on leftover scratch scraps.
I built the coop 1' off the ground over a solid redwood tree stump that had been cut down. I leveled the stump and used it as a foundation base for the coop, and it has worked great!
Our ladies lay dark brown, light brown, and pastel green eggs, 4 a day total. So we never have to buy eggs these days!
We hope to contribute to the forum and learn as we go! I welcome any questions!
John and Caitlin
