So, please don't think this is a stupid question. When the air cell looks to be a little too big, should I increase or decrease the humidity. I have 2 silkie eggs that are on day 21. I'm using a homemade incubator/hatcher because I am attempting a staggered hatch. The homemade bator is holding a VERY steady humidity...way better than my Hovabator ever thought about doing. However, I have been concerned about temps. Hubby is an electrician and extremely mechanically inclined. He made some kind of thermometer that cycles the bulbs in the bator. So with that said, I got a little worried this morning and decided to candle. I did it very quickly and only had about a 1% drop in the humidity. One of the eggs had pipped internally. The other one looks like the air cell is taking about a 1/3 of the egg, but I did see movement in both of them. Humidity is about 70% so I need to know if I'm doing anything wrong. Think the humidity is too high? Should I drop it? Will that get the size of the air cell down? Sorry for all the questons....

Generally a large air cell indicates low humidity. 70% is not low. If you have been opening the lid you may be losing too much moist air and your eggs will be part of the source to replenish it. I would suggest keeping the incubator closed until they hatch.

If they're already at day 21 you should just let them be-no reason to bother with them at this point. Good luck!!!
