Since we have moved out into the country finally like we have wanted for many years, I have started my chicken clan. They are all babies just over a week old and I choose pullets. The two silkies that I got today was a guess on their sex. I picked out ones that had smaller daintier features and was the smallest of the week old batch that I hope are girls. I named both of them Tootsie and Tammy. I also have 2 Rhode Island Reds that I named Sally and Simone. The three Americaunas I named after my three granddaughters, Lilly, Shekinah and Kaihlie. The one Australorp I have I named Gladys, so I have 8 chicks in all.
I am getting them used to me and they are eating out of my hand and I developed a chickie call that they are now answering too and come over to the side of the box that I am at. My husband and I finished converting a good sized shed out back into a coop with laying boxes. We also put waterboard on the walls because the people who used to live here before we bought it left some waterboard so we used it and my husband got wood off of jobs that was left over that they said he could have, so, we have practically fixed a lovely home for them out of free stuff! We got the posts in to put the chicken wire on 4 feet high. I may put a net over it too incase for hawks, otherwise, we have made a lovely home for our chickies. The last time I had chickens to take care of what in Australia when my family immigrated there in the 60's and we come back in 1968. I loved having chickens and I also had a pet duck that got famous and was on televison and in the newspapers etc. He was a Masgove duck.
Later on I am thinking of getting a baby goose, preferably a gander. I love geese too.
I am glad that I found this forum because I can see it has tons of information that can help me.
