We got this one in a mixed group at about 4 months old . It looked like a barred rock (hen) at that time. I have looked at barred rock rooster photos and he doesn't match them. Any ideas?

He's most likely a black sex link rooster.

What might I get letting him breed with barred rock hens?

He'a a mixed breed rooster who had one barred parent. Could be a black sex link, could be a barnyard mix.

Putting him with barred Rock hens is going to give you.....

all male chicks will be barred, as they get the gene from Momma. Half will also get a barring gene from the male, so they'll look more like a pure barrred bird.

half the females will get a barring gene from the father. As chicks they'll be pretty much identical to the males that get one barring gene, so sexing can't be done by the normal "rules" of sexing barred birds.

half the female chicks won't get a barring gene from the father, and as no females get a barring gene from momma, they're basically black sex link chicks. Any you hatch out with no white spot on the head will be female. But, the opposite is not true--you'll also have females with white head spots. Confused yet?

X 2 - in short, putting a mixed breed rooster over your barred rock hens will result in mixed breed chicks *some* of which will be sexable at hatch.

Thoroughly confused! But he is a good boy and the offspring should be fair layers or fryers right? Thanks for the info and help and cerebral exercise I need it at my age.

If no one else is I sure am.

I am just going with he is a nice looking well cared for rooster. [IMG]

OOOOHHHHH and maybe he should be called Fabio due to his flowing blond "hair"

Looks like a Black Sex-link rooster or another Barred Rock mix.
