I bought a big 50 lb bag from our local feed store and when I opened it, there were these tiny black bugs in the feed. It was gross. Is this normal. Will the chickens still like it? Should I return it?

I wouldn't say its normal, but I don't think its bad--like sometimes you gt bugs in flour.

Chickens like bugs--I would keep it, but that's just my opinion.

I would NOT feed that feed! No way!

Take that back to wherever you bought it and get another bag (bug free, of course!) or get your money back and try elsewhere. I'm sorry, I know they are chickens and they eat bugs and all, but there's just no way I would feed that.

The chickens probably wouldn't care, but you should still return it. There's no harm in insisting you get what you paid for. I returned a bag with bugs once and they gave me a new one while letting me keep the old one, which was pretty nice. The chickens just got a scoop of buggy food everyday with the regular food while I had it.

What you have is weevils... The eggs are in almost all grain products..People and pet foods.. You bring them home in your flour and oatmeal.. The eggs are usually there.. Just need the right temperature to hatch..

If it is a small infestation on the poultry food.. I think the chickens would like the bugs to eat.. Keep the bag of food away from all others.. If it came from the feed store.. I would bet other bags have them hatched too..

I had to go through this with a box of oatmeal from the store.. Take all your food. Or birds food.. Seal it up the best you can and put it in the freezer for a week..It will kill all eggs and bugs...

When you buy any grains from the store..I now do this to all my flour or grain based foods.. Freezer for a week... Then air tight containers... Now no more bug invasions...

I did a big search online about it when I found those darn things.. Found one site that says the old timers just used to take sifters and just sift he bugs out.. But darn that sounds gross.. [IMG]

I used to find weevils in my cereals all the time, and now I never see any. It makes me worry about what they're doing to the cereal to keep the weevils out. It's probably not nearly as horrid as I'm imagining, but it certainly would put my mind at ease to find at least one weevil in my cereal box.

I have had that happen, and returned it the next day.

Return it and when they give you another bag ask to open it and look inside. Take some duct tape with you to reclose.[IMG]
