I don't have a real chick waterer...help!

Hello everyone My 5 chicks are supposed to ship tomorrow and get to me around tuesday or wednesday. I think I have everything...except for a chick waterer. The tractor supply store didn't have it for some reason, so my dad ordered it on Amazon. I don't know when it will get here, and I don't know what to do if the chicks arrive before the waterer.

If the chicks do come first, would I be able to use a small, shallow dish that I have? Is there a reason why I shouldn't use it?

A shallow dish will be just fine. Just make sure you put round marbles or rocks in it so that they can't drown. They will drink in between the marbles just fine. Also make sure if it is small that you check it regularly so that they don't run out of water.

Make sure that if they have any poops at all in it you change it

The same thing happened to me. I got a coffee can and poked 2 holes a 1/2 inch from the top of can,filled 1/2 full of water, put lid back on flipped it upside down in a pie plate, worked great the water doesn't go past the holes so just keep holes lower than the top of pie plate. My waterer came the next day.
