I got my first two huevos today! YEAH! Both hens threw out all of the straw from the laying box. So, when they laid their huevos, I think maybe they fell on the wooden bottom because both of them have a small hole on the pointed end.

Why are they throwing out the straw? Should I use something else? I do have pine shaving for my chicks. Should I use that?

Also, the shell has a bit of a hole but the membranes are still intact. Can we use these Huevos today or are they trash?

My hens do the same thing in some of the nest boxes. I use shavings. I put alot of shavings in the nesting area so it is hard for them to get rid of all the shavings.

I think your "huevos" should be fine to eat. Or let me put it this way. I'd eat them.

Mine throw out EVERYTHINg I tried for padding so I put plastic dishpans in as thei rnest boxes and the slight give of the plastic has save the eggs from breaking. I do replace the starw periodically but they just throw it all out.
