A red light helps to prevent pecking, has a calming effect. White light tends to make them go berserk!

Please don't put a heat lamp in your coop, they are a fire hazard. Every winter there are posts from members that have had a coop fire that cost them their entire flock (plus loss of the coop).

It's a heat source. How old are your chicks? Unless they are older or you keep the room very warm they are probably going to need a regular heat lamp.

two weeks old seem to be doing fine . i have a insulated roosting box in the hen house and was wondering if i should put them out there with a heat lamp my backroom office is really getting smelly.
